News letter 15: British Consulate in Sofia,

22 August 2009

Meeting with British Consulate in Sofia

Last week I met with the British Consulate in Sofia, it was a very good meeting during which we discussed the problems that British property owners and buyers are facing in Bulgaria and what can be done about it.

The Biggest Problem
We agreed that the most urgent need is for changes in the Bulgarian legal system which has not yet caught up on the huge changes that have happened in this country over the past 5 years.
Many of you will know that it is very difficult to get justice through the Bulgarian legal system because the length of trials makes it prohibitively expensive. There is an urgent need for a system that will achieve an outcome in weeks rather than years, this would inhibit the current beviour of some developers and Real Estate Agents who are behaving as thought they are above the law. To this end we have agreed to approach the new minister of justice and to seek a meeting with her.

Write to them
The consulate has kindly provided us with contact details for the newly elected Ministers of Justice, Economy, and Tourism, and the Prime Minister.

Bulgarian's are putting a lot of hope and confidence in this newly elected government which was elected on their election promise to stamp out corruption, Bulgarian's know that this is the way forward for their country.
Below are the addresses of the newly elected Ministers of Justice, Economy, and Tourism, and the Prime Minister.
Please write to these newly elected government officials to outline your problems and any changes that you would like to see, try and make your letter positive and assume that they want to help us because they do. If you can also offer your support for the changes that they are planning for this country because they would be good for Bulgaria and good for us. Bulgarian's that I have spoken to have all told me 'we want these changes also, these changes would be good for Bulgaria and good for Anglo-Bulgarian relationships'.
